This year’s mission will always remain especially important to me for two reasons. Firstly, on
the way to Uganda I was able to pass through Pretoria, South Africa, to celebrate my grand-
daughter’s first birthday. Having my wife, my daughter, my son in law, along with my very dear
and close Uganda Spine Team members, all celebrating Sequoyah’s first birthday together, is a
memory that I will relive over and over again. Secondly, I had the privilege of meeting Masha,
the executive director of Standing Tall (a charitable organization that organizes scoliosis
treatment for those who do have the means) and Jamilla, a vibrant, energetic, compassionate
14 year young girl from Tanzania, with a severe suffocating scoliosis. I was meant to treat
Jamilla in Uganda. Unfortunately Masha, while travelling with Jamilla by her side, was detained
at the Ugandan border accused of child trafficking. Once Masha was able to clear her
reputation, and with the help of many in Texas we were able to organize for her to visit and
have her life altering surgery at the Texas Health Plano Hospital. As has been in the past and I know will be for many more years, I continue to be impressed by
all those who really do care. There are so many of you, in Africa, in North America, and around
the world, to whom I am indebted for the encouragement, the in kind support, and the
volunteerism to the benefit of the less fortunate.
