Mission Impact

"Failure to adapt is the easiest way to fail." - Dr. Sue Benton

Our mission transcended surgical intervention, focusing on sustainable capacity building through education, mentorship, and knowledge transfer. We worked alongside local medical professionals, conducting lectures, collaborative diagnoses, and hands-on training to ensure lasting impact beyond our visit.

Mission Chronicles

Follow our journey day by day as we navigated challenges, celebrated successes, and made lasting connections in Mbarara.

August 9-10: Journey to Uganda
Travel and arrival

After an eventful journey including lost luggage and late buses, Team 1 arrived at Lake View Hotel in Mbarara. Despite travel fatigue, the team immediately began preparations, touring hospital grounds and organizing medical supplies for the intensive weeks ahead.

August 12: First Clinical Day
Medical clinic setting

Our first clinic day exceeded expectations as we saw 61 patients, surpassing our goal of 60. Lines of patients stretched beyond the clinic, each carrying their medical histories. The team's commitment to education was evident as local doctors and students eagerly participated in diagnoses and treatment planning.

August 13: First Surgical Day
Operating room

Despite "Ugandan time" delays, we completed three complex surgeries. When power failed during our final procedure, the team adapted seamlessly, using headlamps and flashlights. The adaptability and resilience demonstrated would become hallmarks of our mission.

August 14-16: The Operating Marathon
Surgical team at work

Five surgeries daily tested our endurance and expertise. Unexpected discoveries, like hidden infected wounds, required immediate adaptation. Despite 14+ hour days and equipment challenges, team morale remained high, driven by the transformative impact on patients' lives.

August 17-19: Fresh Energy & New Perspectives
Team collaboration

Team 2's arrival brought veteran expertise and renewed energy. With over 55 combined mission experiences, the expanded team enabled simultaneous surgeries and comprehensive patient care. Daily "Lessons of the Day" sessions fostered continuous learning and reflection.

August 20-25: Teaching, Impact & Farewell
Community celebration

Our final week emphasized capacity building through lectures and hands-on teaching. A memorable evening at patient Aron's home showcased the lasting impact of our work. His family's gratitude and the feast they prepared reminded us why we commit to these missions - to change lives for the better.
